Graphic novels are a hot item in libraries that will increase
circulation and bring a new format to your patrons. This session covers
the topic with added emphasis on graphic novels read by adults as well
as those titles that are written specifically for adults. Also covered
is "what are graphic novels", "why should I have them in my library",
and "once I have them what do I do with them", as well as the use of
graphic novels in academia. In addition, some title suggestions will be
provided as well as a discussion of "how adult is too adult."
Who Should Participate:
This
is for librarians who deal with patrons of all ages, but especially
those who work with adults, and want to know more about graphic novels.
Teachers who wish to incorporate graphic novels into their classes may
also be interested.

About the Presenter...
David S. Serchay is a youth services librarian for the Broward
County Library System in South Florida, where he is on the graphic
novel selection committee. He has been reading comic books all of his
life and has a personal collection of over 25,000 comics and graphic
novels.
His most recent book is The Librarian's Guide to Graphic Novels for Adults, and he has previously written about the subject in Thinking Outside the Book, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Graphic Novels, Magazines for Libraries, Library Journal, Serials Review, Florida Living, Animato!, Comics Source, and The Librarian's Guide to Graphic Novels for Children and Tweens. He has lectured extensively on the subject and has contributed to the Grand Comic Book Database and GraphicNovelReporter.com. He lives in Coral Springs, Florida and can be reached at davidserchay@yahoo.com.
