Much has been made in recent years of the leadership deficit facing
libraries and the need to build the profession’s capacity to develop
strong library leaders. While most of us are at least vaguely aware of
the demographics of the profession and the exodus of librarians due to
retirement, we have done very little to groom the next generation of
library leaders. While the Canadian Library Association advocates a
coordinated leadership strategy, we also need to address leadership
locally in our libraries. This session draws on research that
illuminates the conditions that help people reach their leadership
potential.
Who Should Participate: Library managers in a position to recruit and develop the next generation of library leaders.
The Key Benefits For Participants: By the end of the session participants will be:
- aware of relevant research, with a list of suggested readings
- familiar with the organizational conditions that facilitate leadership development
- equipped with a range of strategies for leadership development.
Key Topics to be Explored:
- the shift from traditional leader development to 21st century leadership development
- the importance of experiential learning
- the value of a framework for measuring progress
- a
sampling of participant experiences in the APLL Institute, a 2 year
certificate program in leadership development, introduced by Southern
Ontario Library Service in 2008.
About the Presenter... Anne
Marie Madziak is a library development consultant with Southern Ontario
Library Service. In her work with public libraries she has trained on
a wide range of topics, facilitated planning sessions and assisted
libraries with a variety of service reviews. She authored the SOLS
publication, Creating the Future You've Imagined: A Guide to Essential Planning.
More recently, Anne Marie coordinates the Advancing Public Library
Leadership (APLL) Institute, a certificate program that combines the
flexibility of on-line learning with highly interactive classroom
sessions. She also teaches a leadership course in the MLIS program at
the University of Western Ontario.
